Our workshop is made up of four 90-minute sessions designed to meet you wherever you are in the writing process. In the first session, you’ll uncover meaningful experiences and ideas that can spark your essay—or revisit your draft with fresh perspective. Next, you’ll explore ways to add vivid details that make your story stand out. The third session focuses on shaping your ideas into a clear, compelling narrative, and the final session gives you space to refine and polish your work into a powerful essay.

Whether you have a nearly-completed essay and want to give it a bit of “oomph,” or whether you haven’t started yet, this workshop takes you through a process that helps you uncover story-worthy moments of your life—even the seemingly insignificant ones—that can make your essay shine.

The “normal” writing you typically do in school is academic writing, usually about topics that are not about you. A college application essay is personal storytelling. What makes this type of writing stand out is not just “proper” writing with good sentence structure and organization—it’s the ability to have people finish your essay and feel like they know you personally. In our workshop, we provide strategies for telling your story in a way that makes your essay memorable.
